Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Newspaper editorials serve as a critical platform for shaping public discourse on social justice issues, advocating for equality, human rights, and systemic reforms. In Ilorin South Local Government, Kwara State, editorials have addressed various aspects of social justice, including economic inequality, gender equity, and access to education (Mustapha & Ibrahim, 2024). By presenting informed opinions and critical analyses, editorials aim to influence public opinion and inspire action toward creating a just society. However, the perception of these editorials by audiences can vary based on factors such as trust in media outlets, content relevance, and personal biases. Understanding audience perceptions is vital for assessing the effectiveness of newspaper editorials in promoting social justice (Adebayo et al., 2023). This study examines how audiences in Ilorin South Local Government perceive newspaper editorials on social justice, exploring their impact and implications.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

While newspaper editorials play a vital role in advocating for social justice, their effectiveness depends largely on audience reception and interpretation. In Ilorin South Local Government, there is limited research on how readers perceive editorials addressing social justice issues. Factors such as perceived bias, lack of contextual relevance, and the dwindling popularity of print media further complicate this role. The study is confined to audience perceptions of newspaper editorials on social justice in Ilorin South Local Government, Kwara State. It excludes other media forms and locations.
